Welcome to Atlantic City
As a prime tourist destination, Atlantic City can trace its origins back to 1854 when the first passengers arrived in the newly incorporated city by train. Atlantic City’s location near major metropolitan centers and its accessibility by rail, made Atlantic City a favorite destination for those seeking to escape the sweltering summer heat of the cities and enjoy its refreshing seashore. Until WWII, Atlantic City was one the east coast’s major tourist attractions with its famous Boardwalk, piers, nightclubs, and beauty pageants. So well-known was the city, that its streets were used for the ever popular game Monopoly.
The years after WWII saw a major change in tourism with the advent of mass air travel. Atlantic City’s popularity faded as many tourists sought relaxation in Florida and the Caribbean. The economic plight of Atlantic City became desperate, and in an effort to remedy the situation, the city approved casino gambling. In 1978, the first casino, Resorts International opened, soon followed by others. The positive economic impact on Atlantic City has been profound with the new tax base making possible many new social initiatives. At present, several large-scale projects such as the huge entertainment complex The Walk are being constructed.
