Capital of Spain since 1501 when Felipe II chose it for it pure air and water, Madrid today is a city of 3m inhabitants. Situated on the banks of the Manzanares River and at 655 meters altitude Europe’s highest capital, Madrid enjoys a cool winter climate with brilliant sunny skies. Today Madrid is not only the administrative capital of Spain but an industrial center as well. With its many monuments, palaces, and assorted architectural gems, it is an important tourist destination.

Getting Around in Madrid

Madrid has an efficient transportation system with trains, buses, and a metro. The Metro connects directly with the airport and with the south bus station. A combination Metro-Bus ticket is 5.80 euros for 10 trips. Train service connects the major cities of the country as well as with other European countries. Bus service in the city and to other cities is well organized and comfortable. Taxis and rental cars are available. Remember that Spain has many toll roads, increasing the cost of auto travel.
