The lovely port city of Barcelona mirrors the ebb and flow of Mediterranean history through the ages. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C., a century later it was enjoying great prosperity and had become the provincial capital. With the decline of Rome , it was conquered by the Visigoths and later occupied by Muslim armies for a short period. Today Barcelona with its l.6m inhabitants is a showplace for museums, architecture, cathedrals, plazas, and culinary delights from the Mediterranean

Getting Around in Barcelona

Barcelona has a punctual air-conditioned transports system that will take you to most of the points of interest. A ticket on the Metro is 1.20 euros but reduced rates can be obtained. Taxis are metered and the cost is 5 euros with a standard tip of 10%. Bus service is excellent throughout the city. Do not forget that the center of Barcelona is designed for walking and transportation is often not needed. An excellent ferry system links Barcelona with Mallorca, Ibizia, and Menorca .
