Attractions are many and varied in Singapore. For a taste of the colonial era, have a drink at the renowned Raffle’s or take an excursion to Fort Canning.
Singapore's Chinatown has many festivals. Chinese New Year in January or February and in May the celebration of the Birth of Budda. In the summer there is the Dragon Boat Festival and in September the Hungry Ghosts Festival celebrating the souls of the departed. The Moslem population observes those festivities surrounding Ramadan in the area of Arab Street. Hindu devotees celebrate Thapusam, now forbidden in India, which involves body piercing.
For nightlife, trendy shops and restaurants, go to Orchard Rd. In Little India, you can find Indian wares and spices at the Zhujiad Center Market. The Empress Place Building from 1865 now houses a Victorian museum and restaurant. Religious structures include the St. Andrew’s Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. In Chinatown you will find the Thian Hock Keng Temple. The Sultan Mosque is located on Arab St. Sentosa Island features a lovely park as well as a beach and resort hotels. Several parks and gardens the Bird Park, Singapore Botanical Garden and Singapore Zoological Garden feature flora and fauna of the area.
