Attractions en Moscow
Among the host of interesting sites in Moscow, some of the most popular are the following. The Kremlin founded in the 12th century with its glittering onion domes, is the political and historical center of Moscow. Red Square contains some of the most famous landmarks in the city including St.Basil’s Cathedral from the 16th century. The renown Bolshoi Theater and the grand Cathedral of Christ the Savior are nearby. The Tretyakov Gallery with its collection of icons and portraits is a must for art lovers. Moscow abounds in picturesque monasteries. Some of the most famous include Andronikov Monastery on the Yauza River, Danilov Monastery from the 13th century, the Danskoi Monastery, and the Simonov Monastery. The Vagankov Cemetery is the resting place for many of Moscow’s leading citizens. All visitors to Moscow delight in the famous Moscow Metro with its marble, chandeliers, and other grand adornments. A trip to the Izmailovsky Souvenier Market, a few minutes from the Imperial Estate of Peter the Great, is an ideal spot to obtain souvenirs, handicrafts, and experience local foods. The Great Moscow State Circus and the Yury Niculins Circus are a delight for both young and old. For shoppers, there is the GUM department store in Red Square and trendy boutiques on the Novy Arbat. Faberge Eggs, jewelry, and Matryoshka Dolls are favorites here.
Getting Around in Moscow
Most visitors arrive at the International Airport. There are also eight major train stations with connections from Moscow, Helsinki, Siberia, the Baltic, and Asia.
With its wide assortment of transportation choices, travel in Moscow is easy. The Metro runs throughout the city and there are buses, trolleybuses, and taxis. Private Minibuses are quite popular with visitors as are tour boats along the river. Rental cars are not recommended until one is familiar with the city.
