Cozumel
71 kilometers south of Cancún, Cozumel Island offers a pleasant stay. The Mayas called this area 'Swallow Island' and went there to worship Ixchel, their goodness of the moon. First it was a sacred place for the Mayas, but later on the island became a commercial port and a pirate hideout.
The island is located in the middle of the Caribbean and is 53 kilometers long and 14 kilometers wide; Cozumel is the biggest Mexican island. It is a perfect place for diving and a lot of visitors enjoy this charming paradise coming from all over the world. The international fame originates in the 60's, when the French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau filmed here some of his documentaries at the reef 'Palancar'. Cozumel Island is an invitation for diving, but its beaches are not so good for swimming.
The best beaches of Cozumel ('San Francisco' and 'Palancar') are located 14 kilometers south of San Miguel; this little town is the capital of Cozumel Island offering a small museum, which keeps the nautical history. The eastern part of the island has spectacular landscapes and sights. The national park 'Chankanab' is a beautiful lagoon located 8 kilometers to the south of San Miguel. where you can find a lot of Maya reproductions, a botanical garden and the most popular bay of the island.
