Malaysia consists of two regions, the western section with the capital of Kuala Lumpur and the eastern part that is situated on the northern coast of Borneo. Head hunting and cannibalism are still practiced in the eastern area. Malaysia’s population of over 23 million consists predominantly of Chinese, Malays, and Indians. Malaysia is a Moslem country but with large numbers of Buddhists and Hindus. Its government is a constitutional monarchy. Malaysia is today the world’s principal exporter of tropical wood, mostly to Japan. Other exports are basic manufactured products, chemicals, animal and vegetable oil, and fuel. Malaysia still retains areas with a colonial-era ambience such as Georgetown and the cool Cameron Highlands. For shoppers, there are bargains to be found in furniture and clothing. Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown offers excellent restaurants. If flying into the country, you will enter at the international airport in Sepang, 31 miles south of Luala Lumpur. There are 5 border crossings and a rail link with Thailand and ferries to Singapore and Indonesia. Malaysia is the site of several religious festivals. In May the Kota Belud Tamu Besar, a large tribal meeting featuring horsemen and traditional ceremonies takes place.
