Attractions in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur’s large Chinatown has fine restaurants offering delectable seafood and other Chinese seafood. Here and elsewhere in the city there are numerous street markets where you can find everything from furniture to clothing and jewelry. Hawker Market is a favorite. Throughout the city you will find remnants of the era of British colonial rule. There are bars in the Golden Triangle and Bangsar areas. There are several festivals here, most of which are associated with Islam. Hari Raya Puasa is a three-day festival marking the end of Ramadan. The Hari Raya Haji commemorates the completion of the pilgrimage to Mecca. In January or February there is Chinese New Year, a joyful celebration with fireworks, dances, and parades. In late January the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, now banned in India, takes place in which devotees pierce themselves in honor of Lord Subramaniam. In July the city enjoys the Flora Fest with a mammoth Floral Parade. On August 30, National Day is celebrated with parades and festivities. In September, Kuala Lumpur celebrates Malaysia Fest with traditional arts and other activities. This is followed by the October Shopping Carnival. The Heritage Station Bar is a former colonial-era train station. Outside of Kuala Lampur are the Cameron Highlands. This is a good refuge from the heat and the site of the country’s tea industry. Here you can play tennis or golf, take jungle walks or view waterfalls and tea plantations.
