Harz National Park in Lower Saxony (NIEDERSACHSEN)
The federal state of Niedersachsen established Germany's 11th National Park on the 1st of January 1994. The Nationalpark Harz in Niedersachsen covers 15.800 ha, is adjacent to the Upper Harz National Park (Nationalpark Harz in Sachsen-Anhalt). This means that together the two Nationalpark Harz consist of approximately 24.700 ha, and run through two federal states being protected by national park status. Both national parks form a natural, environmental unity and are part of the European nature conservation network "Natura 2000".The Park in Niedersachsen located in the western part of the Harz stretches from the low mountain range near Herzberg, across the massif to its northern slopes near Bad Harzburg offering the entire range of characteristic ecological systems, the height varies from 230 m in the north and 270 m on the southern edge up to 927 m on the Bruchberg. The Park offers an ecologically complex landscape and contains different vegetation zones. Nearly all the land within the National Park belongs to the government of the federal state; approximately 95% of the area is forested.
