THE BROCKENBAHN RAILWAY
This 19km branch line of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen with a total rail network stretching over a length of 130 km runs from Drei Annen Hohne to the summit of Brocken and came into service on the 27th March 1899. The line’s popularity continued for many decades until the line from Schierke onwards was closed to tourists on August 13th 1961, due to the restricted zone orders imposed by the Russians and the East German (DDR) Government. First remaining closed the Brocken's walls gates got re-opened to the public on Sunday 3 rd December 1989 and Brockenbahn with renewed services commenced again on 15th September1991.
This narrow-gauge railway will take you to historical sites of nearby medieval towns, and also on to the "Brocken", where Germany’s highest train station is located. The journey is very atmospheric through forests and around big or very tight curves offering wonderful views. It is a special tip for wintertime!
