“Once you see it, you will not wish to leave,” Columbus remarked in 1494 when describing the island we now call the Dominican Republic. The thousands of visitors who come here now appear to share his enthusiasm.
Three years after Columbus’ first landing, his brother Bartoleme founded Santo Domingo, making it today the oldest city in the hemisphere. Soon it became the center for Spanish commerce and exploration in the New World. Today the buildings and plazas of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo reflect this cultural heritage. On the bank of the Rio Ozama that flows through the city, stands the imposing Alcazar the governor’s palace erected by Columbus’ son Diego. Here were entertained the conquistadors.
