This metropolis of 3.5m situated in Australia ’s southwest state of Victoria , which is famous for its wineries and some of the most spectacular scenery on the continent. First settled in 1835, Melbourne ’s population grew dramatically with the discovery of gold in the 1850s. From 1901 until 1927 it served as Australia ’s capital city. Melbourne ’s architecture reflects its growth during the Victorian Era and today it is second only to London in the number of Victorian structures. It is home to numerous sporting events including the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, and the Australian Tennis Open.

Getting Around in Melbourne

The airport is 30 min. from the CBD – Central Business District. Melbourne is laid out in a grid pattern which greatly simplifies travel. In addition to buses and taxis, Melbourne offers a free tram system which circles throughout the CBD. For regional or interstate travel there is an excellent bus and train system. Remember that distances are vast in Australia . A bus trip from Melbourne to Sydney takes 12hrs. and to Canberra 9 hrs. Trains are comfortable with sleepers and are air-conditioned. Major lines are the Indian Pacific, the Great Southern Railway, and the Overland .
