The gastronomy of Athens as in other Mediterranean countries makes great use of fresh vegetables, wine, lamb, and seafood. Virtually every recipe features olives and olive oil. Peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes stuffed with rice and meat are another traditional fare. For an aperitif try ouzo composed of anise, brandy, and water. An absolute must in Athens is to visit an ouzo-bar. This is the nucleus around which Greek business and social life revolves. Getting Around in Athens
Athens visitors arriving by air enter the airport located 45 minutes by car from the city center. Athens has sea connections from the port of Pireo, 5 miles from the heart of Athens. Ferries connect with other Greek islands as well as Mediterranean ports. A smaller port, Rafina, is to the east of Athens. Urban transportation was upgraded for the 2004 Olympics and Athens now has a modern metro system that connects with the airport. A large fleet of buses efficiently covers the city. Driving in Athens is rather difficult and it is recommended to use public transportation if possible.
Attractions in Athens
Tourist sites to visit in Athens are vast in number but usually consolidated into a relatively small area that facilitates viewing. Here is the renowned Acropolis of Athens, the most important archaeological site in Greece where you can contemplate the magnificent Parthenon and the Temple of Athena-Nike, the Propileous, and the ancient Theater of Dionysus among others. Located here is the Museum of the Acropolis. At night the Parthenon is illuminated, an unforgettable sight. Nearby are the Temple of Efestos and the Library of Adrian. A short distance away is the Cemetery of Keramicos, the Arch of Adrian and the Temple of Zeus. In this vicinity are the Greek Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. For a change of pace, visit the National Park outside of Athens and the Olympic Village from the games in 2004. The National Library, the University, the Academy of Art all are built in a neo-classical style. The National Archaeological Museum has important exhibits and artifacts. Other important museums are the Byzantine Museum, the National Museum of Painting, and the Museum of Traditional Arts. Visitors are welcome to the many Christian Orthodox Churches in the city. For shopping, go to Omonia Square in Athen’s center with shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
