Cape Town is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities of the world – its harbor, streetcars and landscape reminiscent of San Francisco in California. Situated on the southwestern tip of the country at the junction of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, it enjoys a mild climate conducive to sports and an outdoor lifestyle. Attractions in Cape Town

Famous Table Mountain and the renowned botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch are situated only minutes from the city center. Because of its temperate climate, outdoor activities can be enjoyed year round. Nearby are natural preserves such as the Cape Point Nature Reserve where visitors can observe whales. The beaches around Cape Town afford opportunities for water sports -- swimming, diving, wind surfing, and sailing among others. At the V&A Waterfront you can visit upscale boutiques, take boat trips, or take a scenic helicopter rides. Cape Town offers the tourist a variety of cultural attractions – museums, a planetarium, and numerous art galleries. The Two Ocean Aquarium has over 300 species of marine life. Tours are made into the African Townships where local art and crafts are displayed. Penguins can be observed at Boulder Beach. A boat tour goes over to the former prison at Robben Island. There is much to do for sportsmen in the Cape Town area – shark diving, big game fishing, kite surfing, mountain biking, rock climbing, shooting, and skydiving. At days end, visitors can enjoy Cape Town’s casinos or entertainment in one of it restaurants, bars, or clubs – venues with either international or local flavor.

The restaurants of Cape Town utilize the great variety of fresh produce, fruits, fish, and meats found in South Africa. Delectable oysters are a favorite here as is all seafood. South African specialties include bobotie – meat and curry; bredies – a meat and vegetable stew; biltong – seasoned dry meat; and potjiekos, a stew cooked in the open air, and sosaties – skewed meat. Indian influence is seen in the excellent curry and chutney served here. The Cape area is famous for its fine wines and its beer. The Blue Danube restaurant operated by the well-known chef Tomas Sinn is a favorite in Cape Town. In its Victorian structure, the gourmet cuisine reflects local as well as Austrian fare.

Getting Around in Cape Town

Cape Town is linked to other cities in South Africa by daily flights of the national carrier South African Airways (SAA). SAA offers a variety of discounts, some as much as 30%. Starlight Cruises has service to the principal ports of the country. South Africa has an excellent rail network and trains connect Cape Town with other cities. Trains are air-conditioned with a dining car. Train safaris are available through companies such as Rovos Rail and Transnet Museum. The main roads in South Africa are well maintained. Rental cars with or without a driver are available at the airport. To drive in South Africa an international driver’s permit is required. A network of buses, streetcars, and taxis provide urban transportation in Cape Town.
